The Impact of Environment on Physical Health

Our environment plays a crucial role in our physical health. Everything around us makes up our environment, from the materials our clothing is made of to the air exhaled by those around us. The average household is full of chemicals and toxins most people are unaware of, and offices and working environments are no better. Textbook author Brian Seaward (2021) noted, “repeated exposure to artificial light, disturbing office noise, bad indoor air quality, chemical particulates from photocopier machines, and electromagnetic pollution all have a deleterious effect on wellness.” Essentially, everything around us affects us in some way, even if we don’t register it consciously.

Minimizing Environmental Pollutants

Eliminating, or at least minimizing, the harm caused by environmental pollutants should be a no-brainer, but we are often at the mercy of our government. When new chemical concoctions are released for public use, we often don’t find out how harmful they are until we’ve had time to notice the impact of their effects. McGinn (2002) explains, “The burden of proof for existing chemicals and many new ones… rests with public authorities and scientists who must prove something is harmful after it has been released [to the public].” Because of this lack of long-term studies prior to consumer use, we must practice caution. Switching to cleaning products and personal care products that contain only natural ingredients is better for the environment and a healthier alternative overall.

Steps to Improve Environmental Wellness

  1. Use Natural Products: Opt for cleaning products and personal care items that contain natural ingredients. These products are generally less harmful to both the environment and your health.

  2. Improve Indoor Air Quality: Use air purifiers, houseplants, and proper ventilation to improve the air quality in your home and workplace.

  3. Reduce Exposure to Artificial Light and Noise: Whenever possible, minimize exposure to artificial light and noise. Use natural lighting and soundproofing solutions to create a healthier environment.

  4. Be Cautious with Technology: Limit exposure to electromagnetic pollution by reducing the use of electronic devices and opting for wired connections instead of wireless ones when possible.

  5. Stay Informed: Keep yourself informed about the potential hazards of new products and chemicals. Knowledge can help you make safer choices for your environment.


Our environment significantly influences our physical health, often in ways we may not immediately recognize. By being proactive and making conscious choices to minimize exposure to harmful pollutants, we can create a healthier living and working environment. Embracing natural products, improving air quality, reducing artificial light and noise, and being cautious with technology are all steps that contribute to better environmental wellness. Taking these steps not only benefits our health but also supports a more sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle.
